As part of its
action plan to facilitate and strengthen social mobilisation for
breastfeeding, WABA envisioned a global unifying breastfeeding
promotion strategy. The idea of a day's celebration was later turned
into a week, which has become to be known as World Breastfeeding Week
(WBW) - celebrated every 1-7 August to commemorate the Innocenti
Declaration.
World Breastfeeding Week
was first
celebrated in 1992, and now involves over 120 countries and is
endorsed by UNICEF, WHO and FAO.

The
breastfeeding movement has come a long way, and today, the issue
of breastfeeding transcends disciplines and the seeds have since
sprouted and have roots in communities and international agencies
alike. It was felt that it is time that the breastfeeding movement
has its very own charter that clearly lays down our principles and
reasons for us to support the breastfeeding cause.
